Lunges

A lunge is a great exercise for working the whole of the leg area, similar to a squat in fact. It targets the front of the leg (quads), the back (hamstrings) and the bum (glutes) making it a great ‘all rounder’ to put into your training schedule.

I also find that this exercise is also a great pulse raiser so you’ll be burning off some extra calories too!

The Method

  • Start with feet pointing forward and slightly wider than shoulder width apart
  • Take a long stride forward with the right leg, bending the front knee as you place your front foot onto the floor
  • Don’t over-bend the knee by making sure that your knee doesn’t go further forward the front of the toes
  • As you lunge forward drop the back leg towards the floor by bending the knee
  • Stop when the knee is just above the floor
  • Keep upright with your shoulders pulled back at all times
  • Now push back the right leg so you’re back to where you started, in the standing position with both feet just wider than shoulder width apart
  • Repeat all of the above but on the left leg
  • Congratulations you’ve just performed a lunge on each leg!

Your target should be 2-3 sets of 5 lunges per leg.

Working the large muscle groups of the body in exercises such as the press ups, squats and lunges will result in more muscles getting leaner, quicker which is what you’re looking for. The leaner the muscle the higher your metabolism so you’ll be burning more calories so helping to flatten that tummy!
